X Fractions with Scaling (and Pudding)

This week in math we are learning how to predict the outcome of a multiplication problem by looking at the factors. When fractions are involved it's easy to decide if the product will be greater than or less than the original number.

Before moving on, let's watch a silly movie about the different types of fractions...

rude, polite, and confused.

(or something like that)

Anywhooooo...

Fractions with Ferdinand... and Pizza

This week, 5th graders are taking all of the information we learned about fractions and solving word problems.

Before we get started, there's one thing we need to remember...

A fraction is really just a division problem.

Drew remembers that a fraction is a division problem with this nifty tip...

Keep this tip in your mind as we move on to fraction word problems (it will come in handy).

Before you continue...
If you need a refresher on how to multiply fractions, click here.
For a review on what it means to take "a fraction of a whole," click here.

Moving on...

When you read word problems you have to visualize the story and answer the question. Sometimes it helps to draw pictures too.

Here are a couple of word problems. Both are asking you to find the fraction of a whole.

Can you solve these fraction word problems? Remember, we are taking a fraction of a whole.
(of = x)

Here are a few more resources to help you with this week's concept:

Blog Challenge:
Make up your own fraction word problem and put it in the comment box. I will attempt to solve it! Thinking cap required.

Simply Simplifying Fractions

Today we met in Class Connect for a little simplifying fractions practice.

We discovered that we can reduce fractions to make them easier to deal with.

Simplifying them doesn't change the value.
No matter how you slice them, all of the pizzas below are equivalent (and delicious).

Here is another helpful video from Math Antics.
This one explains how to simplify fractions.
