KCFM... Your Station for Fraction News!

This week in math we learned how to divide fractions. Luckily it's as easy as remembering a cool radio station name.

Here's how it works:

                    Keep the first fraction the same.

                    Change the division sign to a multiplication sign.

                    Flip the second fraction.

                    Multiply across.

Now, when you divide fractions by whole numbers or vice versa, just remember to put the whole number over 1 to easily change it into a fraction. You have to do this to help with the Flip and Multiply steps.

If the whole number comes second in the equation, you'll have to do what we at KCFM like to call The Whole Number Flip. 

It's the latest craze.

Ben Ten Form (Not)

As we continue on with our decimal unit, we come across an interesting fact. There are many ways to write numbers.

We are going to focus on three:

Standard

Written

Base-10

Here is an example of a written number using each method:

Standard form is just how it sounds. Standard. This is how we usually write numbers when solving math problems. Pretty standard stuff.

We can also write a number out in words. When doing this, it helps to say the number aloud. Then write what you hear. If there is a decimal, you write "and." That's the only time "and" should be in the written form of the number.

This video will help explain how to read a number that includes a decimal.

Next up is Base-10 Form.

Base-10 numbers are written as products added together. Use place values to help you. Imagine collecting base-ten blocks to show the value of the number. Essentially, that's how this form breaks down.

Welp, we finished learning about all of the 5th Grade Common Core Standards! We are awesome like that.

You now have a hearty notebook to show for all of your learning. If you want, you can send me a picture of your notebook and I will post it here!

The final touch is a nifty Table of Contents. Print it out and staple the two pages to the first page of your notebook... the one we left blank at the beginning of the year.

Now go through your spiral and number all of the pages.

Then, list the title/concept and the page number on your Table of Contents!

Get Ready for Class Connect!

Hey kids!

This year all 5th graders will attend one Math and one ELA (English Language Arts) Class Connect each week. We will begin on September 15th! Dates, times and links to these classes will appear on your daily class schedule.

ELA: Wednesdays

10:00 AM or 1:00 PM

On the first blank page of your notebook, write TABLE OF CONTENTS on the top line. You can leave the rest blank for now. We will fill in the Table of Contents as we go!
