Week 5: Barn Owl Observation

Click the link below to spy on a real, live barn owl family! Right now there are two owlets living in the owl nest box. Ashley hatched on August 7 and Carrie hatched on August 8, so they are almost two months old! Depending on the time of day, you may also see the mother and father owls. You can tell who the dad is because he has a white chest and face.

For this week's response, go to this Live Owl Nest Cam and tell me what the owls are doing!

Extra Credit: In addition to your observation above, send me one important fact about barn owls.

Your comment will not be seen by others until I approve it. Please respond before Friday, October 8th!

Owls sleep in the day and are awake at night because they are nocturnal. The owls are trying to sleep.

Cody October 4, 2010 at 9:38 AM

Owls eat small animals like mice.

Cody October 4, 2010 at 10:24 AM

The owl is in the corner sleeping then begins to look at the camera.

Abigail October 4, 2010 at 10:25 AM

The owl looks like it is sleeping but then it starts to move and stop and move and stop.

The owls white face is shaped like a heart.

Logan October 4, 2010 at 11:14 AM

I can't see the owls on the screen, but we have some in our barn!
Barn owls have a huge wing span and are totally white. They have sharp claws called talons.

We can't see the barn owls on the screen, but we have a family of them in our barn!
We watch them pick up their food.
They come out just at dusk.
They don't hoot, they screech!
The owlets screech for food. You can tell when they have it because they're totally quiet!
It's fun to watch them chase our great dane!

The owls we have in our barn also are not afraid of people. They fly right up to and over us and we have video of it! We can see their faces really well when they swoop down low like that and stare at us in the face!

The baby owls were eating something off the floor of the owl box. They also pecked at each other and the bolt on the side of the box.

Judy October 5, 2010 at 1:10 PM

When we were watching the owl cam one baby was sleeping, and the other was grooming itself.

Naomi October 5, 2010 at 4:58 PM

They were sleeping face to face. Barn Owls also have heart shaped faces.

Owls sleep in the day and are awake at night.
Thanks for sharing that website.

salara October 5, 2010 at 5:44 PM

I forgot to tell you the owls were sleeping.

Bailey October 6, 2010 at 9:55 AM

The owls are rocking. One turned it's head and opened it's beak.
Owls can turn their head all the way arownd.

Rianna October 6, 2010 at 2:43 PM

I like the owls, the baby are cute. We are only seeing the babies right now.

Arinne October 6, 2010 at 2:47 PM

I like the owls, they are cute. The bigger kept getting closer to the camera. The bigger one also sits in front of the smaller one most of the time, it looks like she is protecting it.

Annah October 6, 2010 at 5:30 PM

The owls were rocking back and forth in their sleep. They sleep during the day.

Kaiden October 6, 2010 at 10:00 PM

When I looked there wasn't anything to see. But Barn owls eat mice which makes my cousin Sarea scream that she hates them. She has a pet mouse named Demon that escaped a few weeks ago.

Rachel October 7, 2010 at 8:43 AM

One owl was sleeping in front of the camera. Most barn owls have a wingspan of 30-43 in.

Noah October 7, 2010 at 11:21 AM

Cool!! The owl is fluffing his feathers right now. I saw a pygmy owl at the Zoo.

Jacob October 7, 2010 at 12:31 PM

I saw Ashley coming out to see mom. And Carrie was screaming the whole time. We saw the mom land for a short time on the light pole the first night.

Daniel J October 7, 2010 at 12:32 PM

I saw Carrie come out and then both Carrie and Ashley went back inside. Boy can they scream loud. A lot.

Floriana October 7, 2010 at 12:56 PM

There is one baby and it rocked in its sleep. It is windy and its fuzz is starting to blow away.

hi mrs.sol,
the barn owl isn't endangered, although in many countries it has suffered from poisons used to kill rodents; many also die on roadsides, dazzled by headlights. the owl is a valuable ally to the farmer, helping control vermin, but nest sites are disappearing with the steady tidying of the countryside.
I lived in Battleground, three year's ago we had three pair of barn owls living above the stadium. now that i live in woodland we have two pair of barn owls living in the roof above the high school gym.so its know wonder i love studying about owls.
